The surface matters more than most buyers expect — the same paint behaves differently on cartridge paper, canvas and board. 46 products across paper, canvas, panels and boards.

Choosing a surface

Paper weight is the first decision. Dala's sketch pads are 120gsm; watercolour pads are 300gsm. The heavier weight is made to take wet media — worth the difference for painting rather than drawing.

Stretched canvas is for finished work and display. More expensive per piece and worth it only where the result is meant to be kept or shown.

Canvas panels and boards are rigid canvas mounted on board. Cheaper than stretched canvas, easier to store flat, and better suited to a class set.

Wooden panels and cradle boards are for older students working in acrylic or oil.

For schools

Weight before size. For painting, buy the heavier paper. A large sheet of 120gsm is a false economy under wet paint.

Panels store better than stretched canvas. For a class of thirty, flat panels stack; stretched canvases do not.

Match the surface to the paint. Tempera and finger paint are fine on paper. Acrylics and oils justify canvas or board.

Buy paper in bulk. It is the one art material that never goes unused.

Common questions

What paper weight for painting?: The 300gsm watercolour pads are made for wet media. The 120gsm sketch pads are for drawing.
Canvas or canvas panel for a class?: Panels — cheaper, flatter to store, and less easily damaged.
Do we need canvas at all?: Only for work meant to be displayed or kept. Most classroom painting is better and cheaper on paper.
