Drawing materials cover everything from a Grade R wax crayon to artist pencils and drawing ink. The choice is usually about age and mess as much as quality.
Choosing a drawing medium
Wax crayons are the foundation-phase standard — cheap, hard to break, and they work on almost any paper. We stock 10 crayon products from R12 to R109, including bucket quantities for classroom use.
Chalk covers two quite different things. Board chalk and chalk sticks are for boards and pavements — 10 products from R8 to R147.
Chalk markers are liquid pens and a separate product entirely: Dala's work indoors on paper and cardstock, canvas, glass, concrete, ceramics, blackboards and whiteboards. 3 products, R35 to R125.
Pastels come in soft and oil forms and behave differently. Dala's oil pastels give intense colour and do not require fixing. Soft and chalk pastels blend more readily. 8 products, R30 to R216.
Artist pencils are graded by hardness — softer grades give darker, broader marks; harder grades hold a point. A school set usually spans a few grades rather than one.
Inks and pens are for older students doing line work and lettering. Permanent on skin and clothing.
For schools
Buy crayons in bulk. Individual boxes are convenient and expensive. Buckets suit a classroom that loses and breaks things, which is every classroom.
Chalk markers are more versatile than chalk. They work on glass and whiteboards as well as blackboards, which makes them useful beyond the traditional board.
Oil pastels need no fixative, which makes them the more practical pastel for a classroom where work goes straight into a folder.

Common questions
- What do foundation phase classes actually need?
- Wax crayons in bulk, and chalk if there is a board. Pencils and pastels become useful later.
