Brushes are where schools most often overspend or underspend. A class set of the wrong shape gets used badly and replaced early. We stock 35 brush products from R5 to R114.
Choosing brushes
Shape decides use. Round brushes hold a point and suit detail and line work. Flats cover ground quickly and give a clean edge. Filberts are rounded flats, useful for blending. Fans are specialist and rarely needed in a classroom.
Grade decides price. Dala distinguishes its ranges by application: natural hair brushes are described as professional standard for fine work, while the Golden Taklon synthetic range is described as an economy brush for school projects. For a class set, that distinction is the useful one.
Size. Large brushes for young children, not small ones. A Grade R class painting with a size 2 round will produce frustration; the same class with a broad flat produces paintings.
Sets or singles. Sets are convenient for a starter kit. Singles let you buy ten of the one size a class actually uses, which is usually cheaper per brush that gets used.
For schools
Buy the school range, not the professional one. Dala's economy brushes are made for exactly this use, and the price difference across a class set is substantial.
Buy for the age, not the artwork. Younger classes need larger, sturdier brushes.
Buy duplicates of one or two sizes rather than a wide range. Most classroom painting uses two brushes; the rest of a set gathers dust.
